Practical overview

Start with the portal requirement, not the product name

A Digital Signature Certificate connects a verified identity with a cryptographic key pair so that an online system can validate who signed and whether the signed data changed. For Indian statutory and tender use, the most important first step is to check the receiving portal’s current certificate requirement. Ordering before that check can lead to a signature-only certificate where encryption is also required, or to an applicant category that does not match the portal account.

Our Chandigarh team helps applicants translate that requirement into a certificate type, validity and verification path. We review the intended use, individual or organization status, location, existing token and deadline. The application, KYC and issuance still take place through the applicable official eMudhra flow. This separation matters: eMudhra Limited is the licensed Certifying Authority; we are an authorized partner providing local facilitation and support.

What to prepare

Keep the applicant’s active mobile number and email address ready. The name and identity details should match the source records used for verification and the profile on the target portal. Depending on the route, you may need PAN, Aadhaar-linked access, organization authorization details, address or identity records, and a short video verification. Foreign applicants and document-signer deployments follow different evidence requirements, so they should be assessed separately.

Security rule: Never share an OTP, token PIN, private key or remote-access control with an agent. Use secrets only on the official issuer or government portal screen.

After issuance

The certificate may need to be downloaded to a compatible cryptographic token, and the token driver or signing utility may need to be installed. Then the DSC must usually be registered or mapped on the destination portal. Browser permissions, signer services, profile mismatches and an expired older certificate are common sources of failure. Our post-issuance checklist keeps these checks in a sensible order.

Why local assistance helps

Applicants often contact support only after a deadline becomes urgent. A better approach is to verify the certificate requirement, identity match, device availability and portal account two or three working days earlier. Local assistance is useful when a director, accountant, tender team or authorized signatory needs a clear owner for coordination—without confusing partner support with the issuer’s statutory role.

Questions about DSC for Foreign Nationals

Clear answers before you begin

Which certificate is usually used for Indian statutory and tender use?+

The correct choice depends on the destination portal and whether it asks only for signing or also for encryption. We confirm the stated portal requirement before you begin. Tender workflows commonly require a combo certificate, while many filing portals use a signature certificate.

How long is the certificate valid?+

Common validity choices are one, two or three years, subject to certificate type and current issuer rules. DGFT options shown in the published policy are one and two years. Select validity based on continuity needs rather than price alone.

Can the process be completed remotely?+

Many Indian individual applications can use a paperless verification route, provided the applicant can complete the required identity and video checks. Organization and foreign-national applications can require additional records.

Who issues the DSC?+

eMudhra Limited issues the certificate as the licensed Certifying Authority. Emudhra Digital Signature provides partner assistance for selection, readiness and setup; we do not represent ourselves as the Certifying Authority.

Will you ask for my OTP or token PIN?+

No. OTPs, private keys and USB-token PINs must remain with the applicant. Enter them only in the official issuer or portal flow. Our team can explain the screen without asking you to disclose a secret.
